David Rakoff was a Canadian-American author, essayist, and humorist known for his sharp wit, self-deprecating humor, and poignant reflections on modern life. Born in 1964 in Montreal, Canada, he moved to New York City, where he built a career as a distinctive literary voice. His essays often blended comedy with vulnerability, capturing the absurdities of everyday life while also exploring deeper emotional truths.

As an author, Rakoff published several acclaimed collections, including Fraud (2001), Don’t Get Too Comfortable (2005), and the Thurber Prize–winning Half Empty (2010). His final work, Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die, Cherish, Perish (2013), was a novel written in verse, completed shortly before his death. Beyond his books, he contributed regularly to This American Life, where his storytelling reached and inspired millions with its honesty and wit.

Known for his memorable quotes, Rakoff once said: “Optimism is not for the fainthearted.” He also reflected on life with: “The world is, to me, divided between people who divide the world into two kinds of people and those who don’t.” These reflections capture his signature blend of humor and insight, qualities that defined his career as both a writer and a cultural commentator.
