David M. Shoup
David M. Shoup (born December 30, 1904, in Battle Ground, Indiana) was a distinguished United States Marine Corps general and Medal of Honor recipient. A DePauw University graduate who joined the ROTC due to financial need, Shoup served in China, Iceland, and in key battles of World War II, including the pivotal Battle of Tarawa, where he led the 2nd Marines and earned the Medal of Honor for extraordinary leadership in November 1943 +15+15+15.
After rising to become the 22nd Commandant of the Marine Corps (1960–1963), Shoup implemented sweeping reforms in logistics, recruit training, and fiscal management. Later, he emerged as a vocal and principled critic of U.S. foreign policy and the Vietnam War, openly challenging military escalation and the military‑industrial complex—positions uncommon for a retired general history.navy.mil+5+5arlingtoncemetery.mil+5.
Shoup is remembered for his sharp, evocative reflections. Among his memorable quotes:
“The galleries are full of critics... Down in the arena are the doers. They make mistakes ... The man who makes no mistakes lacks boldness… His is the brake on the wheel of progress.” +2+2+2
“Remember, God provides the best camouflage several hours out of every 24.” arlingtoncemetery.mil+7+7+7
“To lack intelligence is to be in the ring blindfolded.” +3+3+3
These statements reflect Shoup’s belief in bold action, sharp awareness, and moral courage—traits that defined both his military command and his later advocacy.
