David Harewood
David Harewood is a celebrated British actor, author, and broadcaster, widely admired for his powerful performances on stage and screen. Born in Birmingham, England in 1965, he trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and went on to break barriers as one of the first Black actors to play traditionally white roles in British theatre. Harewood gained international recognition for his role as David Estes in the acclaimed TV series Homeland and as J’onn J’onzz (Martian Manhunter) in Supergirl.
Beyond acting, Harewood has emerged as a compelling author and mental health advocate. His memoir Maybe I Don't Belong Here explores his personal struggles with psychosis and racial identity, shedding light on the challenges faced by Black Britons in the entertainment industry and beyond. His openness about mental health and racism has positioned him as a leading voice in contemporary conversations about inclusion and representation.
In his candid reflections, David Harewood has said, “Mental illness does not discriminate—it affects everyone, everywhere.” Another powerful quote from his memoir states, “I was trying so hard to belong, I forgot who I was.” These poignant words underscore his commitment to authenticity, self-awareness, and social justice, themes that resonate throughout both his acting and literary work.
