He began his career at NeXT, where he led the development of the Enterprise Objects Framework. After Apple acquired NeXT in 1996, Federighi joined Apple but left in 1999 to work at Ariba. He returned to Apple in 2009 to lead macOS engineering and was promoted to his current role in 2012, overseeing the development of iOS, macOS, and Siri .
