Charles Inglis

Charles Inglis (1734–1816) was a pivotal figure in early Canadian religious history, serving as the first Anglican bishop of Nova Scotia. Born in Glencolumbkille, County Donegal, Ireland, he emigrated to North America in 1755, initially working as a teacher before being ordained as a priest in 1758. Inglis became rector of Trinity Church in New York City in 1765, where he gained prominence as a Tory cleric and pamphleteer during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, he relocated to Nova Scotia, where he was consecrated as the first Anglican bishop in Canada in 1787. His diocese encompassed all eastern Canada and Bermuda, and he played a significant role in establishing the Church of England's presence in the region. Inglis was instrumental in founding King's College (now the University of King's College) in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1789. The college aimed to provide a locally trained clergy and promote Anglican values in the colony. Despite facing challenges, including opposition from dissenting religious groups, Inglis's efforts laid the foundation for higher education in the region. He retired to a farm near Halifax in 1796, continuing his writings and serving as a member of the Nova Scotia council from 1808 until his death in 1816.
