Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi is a prominent Burmese politician, author, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, known globally for her nonviolent struggle for democracy and human rights in Myanmar (Burma). Born on June 19, 1945, in Rangoon (now Yangon), she is the daughter of General Aung San, the architect of Burma’s independence. She studied in India and later at Oxford University, where she married British academic Michael Aris and lived abroad before returning to Myanmar in 1988 during a period of political upheaval.

Her return marked the beginning of a lifelong campaign for democracy, which led to the founding of the National League for Democracy (NLD). Despite spending nearly 15 years under house arrest, Aung San Suu Kyi remained a symbol of peaceful resistance and moral leadership. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, and after years of international advocacy, she eventually led the civilian government of Myanmar starting in 2016, though her tenure was marred by controversy and later overturned by a military coup in 2021.
