Ariel Durant
Ariel Durant was a Russian-born American historian, writer, and Pulitzer Prize winner, best known for co-authoring The Story of Civilization with her husband, Will Durant. Born Ida Kaufman in Proskurov, Russian Empire (now Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine) in 1898, she emigrated to the United States with her family as a child. She met Will Durant while still a teenager and became his lifelong partner in both marriage and intellectual pursuits, contributing extensively to their monumental historical works.
Together, Ariel Durant and her husband spent decades writing The Story of Civilization, a multi-volume series covering the history of the world from ancient times to the Napoleonic era. In 1968, they were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for Rousseau and Revolution, one of the later volumes in the series. Ariel was known not only for her scholarly insight but also for her poetic writing style, which brought history vividly to life for readers.
Reflecting her wisdom and philosophy on life, Ariel Durant once said, "A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within." She also remarked, "We are the children of our age and must carry its burdens." These quotes reveal her deep understanding of history’s lessons and her belief in humanity’s responsibility to learn from the past.
