Anne McClain is a pioneering American astronaut, engineer, and U.S. Army officer, best known for her groundbreaking work with NASA. Born on June 7, 1979, in Spokane, Washington, McClain has had a diverse and accomplished career in military service and aerospace engineering. After earning a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Washington, she joined the U.S. Army, where she became a helicopter pilot and an officer in the Army Aviation branch. McClain was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2013 and became part of the International Space Station (ISS) crew in 2018, making her the first female Army officer to go to space.
