Adopting her grandfather's name, Maxwell, she began her professional career as Anna Maxwell Martin to distinguish herself in the industry.

Martin gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Esther Summerson in the BBC's 2005 adaptation of Bleak House, earning her a BAFTA Award for Best Actress. She further showcased her talent in Channel 4’s Poppy Shakespeare (2008), portraying N, a role that also garnered critical acclaim. Her television credits include notable appearances in Line of Duty, Motherland, and Code 404.
