Ad-Rock, born Adam Keefe Horovitz in 1966 in South Orange, New Jersey, is a celebrated American musician, actor, and author, best known as a member of the legendary hip-hop group Beastie Boys. He joined the group in the early 1980s, replacing original guitarist John Berry, and helped transform the Beastie Boys from a punk band into one of the most innovative and successful acts in hip-hop history. Known for his energetic stage presence and razor-sharp lyrics, Ad-Rock played a key role in shaping the sound and voice of the group.
In addition to his music career, Ad-Rock has appeared in several independent films and has collaborated on various creative projects. He co-authored the “Beastie Boys Book” (2018) along with bandmate Mike D, which is a memoir and cultural history packed with personal stories, rare photos, mixtape playlists, and tributes to their late bandmate Adam “MCA” Yauch. The book reflects Horovitz’s humor, honesty, and deep appreciation for friendship, music, and growth across decades of cultural change.
Among his notable reflections, Ad-Rock has said: “We came from a punk rock background, where you don't sell out.” Another quote that captures his candid spirit is: “Growing up is hard, but it’s also great, because you get better at everything — or at least you understand it more.” These quotes highlight Ad-Rock’s authenticity, his resistance to commercial compromise, and his thoughtful evolution as an artist and human being.
