Steven Stucky (1949–2016) was an American composer, teacher, and author, celebrated for his contributions to contemporary classical music. Born in Hutchinson, Kansas, he grew up in Texas and later studied at Baylor University and Cornell University, where he would go on to teach for more than three decades. Known for his mastery of orchestral composition, he earned international acclaim for works that blended modern techniques with lyrical expression.

In 2005, Stucky won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his composition Second Concerto for Orchestra, cementing his reputation as one of the leading voices in American music. Beyond composing, he was also a dedicated writer and lecturer, producing scholarly works on music history, including studies on Witold Lutosławski, one of his major influences. His dual role as both a creator and commentator enriched the field of music and inspired generations of young composers.

Throughout his career, Steven Stucky shared memorable quotes about music and creativity. Among them: “The act of composing is an act of discovery.” and “Music is about communication—about saying something that words cannot.” These reflections reveal his belief in artistic exploration, emotional honesty, and the power of music, values that shaped both his compositions and his writings.
