Socrates

Socrates was a foundational ancient Greek philosopher who is often credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. Born around 470 BCE in Athens, Socrates did not write down his teachings; instead, his ideas and methods were recorded by his students, most notably Plato. He is famous for his unique approach to philosophy, emphasizing questioning and dialogue as a way to seek truth and wisdom, now known as the Socratic method.

Socrates focused on ethics and the examination of moral concepts such as justice, virtue, and knowledge. His relentless questioning challenged the status quo and encouraged critical thinking, but it also led to his trial and execution on charges of corrupting the youth and impiety in 399 BCE. Despite his death, Socrates’ ideas deeply influenced philosophy and continue to be foundational in the study of logic, ethics, and epistemology.

One of Socrates’ famous quotes is, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” highlighting his belief in the importance of self-reflection and inquiry. He also said, “I know that I know nothing,” which expresses his humility and acknowledgment of the limits of human knowledge.
