Moon Jae-in
Moon Jae-in (born 1953) is a South Korean politician and the 12th President of South Korea, serving from 2017 to 2022. Before entering politics, Moon was a human rights lawyer and a key figure in the democratic movement in South Korea during the 1970s and 1980s. He played a significant role in the civil rights movement, advocating for free speech and political reforms under the authoritarian regimes of the time. Moon’s career took a significant turn when he became a close ally and chief of staff to President Roh Moo-hyun, which led to his increased prominence in South Korean politics.
As president, Moon focused on social justice, economic equality, and improving North-South Korea relations. He pursued a policy of engagement with North Korea, advocating for dialogue and peace-building efforts, including historic summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Moon also worked on tackling domestic issues such as economic inequality, housing affordability, and labor rights, while pushing for the modernization of South Korea’s democratic institutions. His presidency, though marked by significant achievements in diplomacy and social policy, also faced challenges, particularly related to economic growth and internal political divisions.
One of Moon Jae-in’s most notable quotes is: "We must make peace with North Korea, so that our children and grandchildren will be able to live in peace." This quote reflects his deep commitment to peaceful resolution of the Korean Peninsula's long-standing division and his vision for a unified and prosperous Korea. Moon’s focus on peace and social welfare has shaped his legacy as a leader who prioritized human rights, dialogue, and progressive reforms, both domestically and internationally.
