Joshua Slocum (1844–1909) was a Canadian-American seaman and adventurer, best known as the first person to sail single-handedly around the world. Born in Nova Scotia, he went to sea at an early age and later became a skilled ship captain. After years of commanding commercial vessels, he turned to sailing for personal adventure and built his legendary journey aboard the Spray, a small sloop he rebuilt himself.

In 1895, Slocum embarked on his famous solo circumnavigation, which lasted over three years and covered more than 46,000 miles. His remarkable feat demonstrated courage, seamanship, and self-reliance, inspiring countless sailors and adventurers. He recorded this journey in his classic book, Sailing Alone Around the World (1900), which remains one of the greatest works of maritime literature.

Known for his wit and practical wisdom, Joshua Slocum left behind memorable quotes that reflect his spirit. Among them: “To be taken into the arms of the sea and rocked into sleep is a sailor’s dream.” and “I was never so happy as when alone at sea.” These words capture both his love for the ocean and the peace he found in solitude and adventure.
