Greg Ginn
Greg Ginn (b. 1954) is an influential American guitarist, composer, and the founding member of the iconic punk rock band Black Flag. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Ginn’s innovative guitar playing and unorthodox approach to music have made him one of the most significant figures in the punk and hardcore punk music scenes. As a central creative force in Black Flag, Ginn’s experimental sound and DIY ethos helped define the genre and shape the alternative music landscape of the late 20th century.
In addition to his work with Black Flag, Ginn has had a diverse musical career, pursuing solo projects and collaborating with various artists. He founded the independent record label SST Records, which played a pivotal role in the underground music movement, helping to launch the careers of several prominent bands such as Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, and Sonic Youth. Ginn’s music, often characterized by dissonant tones and unconventional techniques, is a reflection of his boundary-pushing approach to both sound and artistic expression.
A memorable quote from Ginn, "Music is a way of getting in touch with yourself," encapsulates his view of music as a deeply personal and exploratory process. Throughout his career, Ginn has remained a prominent figure in both the punk rock community and the larger independent music scene, influencing generations of musicians with his bold experimentation and commitment to artistic freedom.
