Compay Segundo (1907–2003) was a legendary Cuban musician, singer, and composer, best known for his contributions to the development of Cuban and Latin music. Born Francisco Repilado in the town of Siboney, Cuba, he adopted the stage name "Compay Segundo" as a tribute to his musical influences. Segundo is often associated with the genre of son cubano and was a vital member of the internationally renowned Buena Vista Social Club ensemble. With a career spanning over seven decades, he became famous for his unique playing of the guitar and tres, a Cuban string instrument, as well as his soulful, charismatic voice.

He was known for his innovative approach to the son, creating complex harmonies and rhythms that captivated audiences worldwide. In addition to his solo career, Segundo collaborated with some of the most important figures in Cuban music, including Ibrahim Ferrer and Rubén González, helping to revitalize interest in traditional Cuban sounds. Segundo famously said, “Music is the language of the soul; it’s how we communicate with the world.”

Compay Segundo’s influence extended far beyond Cuba, as his work with the Buena Vista Social Club brought Cuban music to a global audience.
