Catherine Ashton is a British diplomat and politician, best known for her role as the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy from 2009 to 2014. Born in England in 1956, she spent much of her early career in education and public service before entering politics. Ashton became the first woman to hold the position of High Representative, where she played a key role in shaping the European Union's foreign policy during her tenure. Prior to this, she served as the European Commissioner for Trade.

As a seasoned negotiator, Ashton is particularly recognized for her leadership during critical diplomatic events, including the Iran nuclear negotiations. Her efforts were central to the negotiation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a landmark agreement that aimed to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
