Born in 1976 in Chicago, Giannoulias comes from a Greek-American family with a background in banking, which helped shape his career path. After completing his education at Georgetown University and Boston University School of Law, Giannoulias became involved in local politics, ultimately winning the office of Illinois State Treasurer in 2006. During his tenure, he focused on financial literacy, economic development, and government transparency.

As Illinois State Treasurer, Alexi Giannoulias sought to modernize the state's financial practices and improve public investment systems. He worked on initiatives aimed at increasing state savings and strengthening the state's pension systems. Giannoulias also focused on helping small businesses and entrepreneurs, advocating for greater access to capital for minority-owned businesses. In a 2006 interview, he said, “Being in public service is about more than just politics; it’s about making a real difference in the lives of people, especially the vulnerable and disenfranchised.”

Giannoulias’s influence extends beyond his role as a public official, as he is also a founder of the Athena Group, a financial services firm focused on social impact investing. After leaving public office, he continued his work in the business sector, advocating for sustainable investment and the creation of new opportunities for underrepresented communities. Giannoulias once shared, "True leadership is about building lasting change and helping others achieve their potential, both in business and in life."
